never thought about it like that, but now that I do that's probably why I stopped enjoying them after Siege of Darkness (I wasn't too keen on Legacy either, but Siege was the first Salvatore book I read, and it took alot of recommendations to get me to sit through a forgotten realms novel after the shite that was "Waterdeep"), and why all the later books seemed so stale...
Once you've gotten to know the characters they don't grow, their attitudes don't change, and they only get very minor tweaks in the form of available powers and magic items, not in personality... which Salvatore is very bad at, one look at Spine of the World proves that (and why in the nine hells was Drizzt commenting on the events there, the book should have been solely about Wulfgar, without trying to tie it in so directly to the rest of the Drizzt books)
