TL - I agree with you.
I started out Liberal, because my Mom & Dad were.
My father was a film producer - he did political spots, government and educational films. Some were sold all over the world. He was born in 1919 and was 1st generation American. He was an idealist. He was educated. He volunteered to fight in WW2.
But he hated (really) Republicans. At the time they were for big business and seemed cold to the working class. So he only worked for Democrats. Problem was, they didn't pay when invoiced. I asked him once why the difference. He explained that even though the Republicans had money, he didn't support their ideals. I wondered if this was worth the effort of going to court to get paid so frequently.
I went to Sicily with my navy husband and we supported the troops with supplies from Naval Air Station Sigonella. It was a NATO base and we watched the world go by on their way to the Middle East. I saw how little the troops got paid. (An aside, under the rank of E-4, all enlisted are eligible for food stamps because they earn under the poverty scale.)
I am pro-choice, pro-enviornment, closing the borders, and tough on crime. That makes me an Independent. For I cannot in good conscience support either party.
The essay was good, if a little preachy. I think she was too heavy handed on guns and abortion. She basically said if you don't agree with her on the abortion issue, you were unreasonable. Ah, well.
She did, however, have a point that many have stated as well. The Democrats do not have a cohesive message. Nor could they get it across if they did. They do seem scattered and lacking in judgement.
I believe that she has a rosy view of the Republicans as moral and just, however. No group can be. One thing both parties seem to share... they can be sanctimonious when it suits them.
We used to have outstanding individuals lead this country. To me, party doesn't matter. Integrity does, as well as implementation and being able to get ideas across effectively. I vote for whoever supports my ideas, not whoever is Republican, Democrat or other. No group of any type can be totally wonderful, or in her view, totally lacking (i.e. Democrats).
