Oh, yes, AHP deserved to get punished, but they got punished, IMHO because the jury got angry over the fact that AHP
knew that Fenflurmine could damage heart valves, as a result of their own clinical testing, and they withheld the knowledge from both prescribing physicians and the FDA. Not for any actual harm the patient sustained, evidence of which was, shall we say, underwhelming. But then, the lawyers got busy and went after other, useful drugs like Vioxx, hoping to land a similar bonanza. You get afraid to prescribe anything.
