Slightly off topic.

Sample styling of a very very old PnP game.

Party of 5. A Ranger, a Fighter, a Cleric, a Thief, and a Mage. Make them all about level 10ish, or so.

Add one evil despotic foul tempered DM with beer fueled imagination.

DM: As you crest the ridge, you look down in the valley and see a small army gathered. (Dice rolls) There are about 500 goblins along with an ogre or two and a few orcs.

Mage: No sweat, I'll take care of this fellas. I will start preparing a few fireballs and I pull out my wand of cloudkill.

DM: Ok. You have the hight advantage, nobody has noticed you yet. (Dice rolls) You are free and clear to rain destruction.

Moments later....

DM: Ok. The army is now gone. Party gains x amount of experience. As you look on to the ridge at the far side of the valley, you see a vast ocean of black pouring down the side. The loud explosions have brought the attention of the whole army. You just obliterated the advance scout party. (Dice rolls) Several thousand goblins, about 50 ogres, and a few dozen orcs are quickly advancing on you.

Ranger: I prepare to make my stand here. Can I call any animals for help?

Fighter: I'm with him. I get out my goblin slaying dagger and my ogre slaying club.

Thief: I don't get paid enough for this! (Fails moral check and runs away)

Cleric: I will start praying and see if I can summon some sort of divine aid. Perhaps I can raise the bodies of those that have died and slow them down a bit?

Mage: I want to cast a Haste Spell.

DM: And?

Mage: Once I cast the Haste Spell on my self, I want to start running as fast as my legs can carry me! Away from the incoming mob that is!
