Despite the riches that Gates has, by comparison, he has nowhere near the level of raw wealth that Carnegie, Mellon, or Rockafeller had in their day.
I don't remember the exact figures, but I remember a white paper on it when I worked at The Vanguard Group (huge mutual fund co).
Using rough figures and 1998 dollars:
Gates ~ $50 billion
