Can't resist, must come with lame joke now: What's the difference nowaday?
Ahem.. Some definitions:
Rap: A vocal style where the performer rythmically speaks instead of sings. Since there is no (or very little) tonal work there is a strong sense of rythm, also the one endemic in the words themselves. Rap was formerly almost only practiced within the Hip Hop genre, but it has since spread to many other genres such as RnB, rock, punk, metal and whatnot.
Hip Hop: A genre of music originally developed in poor black neighbourhoods in american cities. The genre has gained popularity and productive hip hop scenes can now be found in the entire western world. Hip Hop has also had an effect on nearly all other rythmic genres forming a plethora of hybrid genres.
Rock: A great mass of diverse musical genres sharing some basic traits and a common history. The genres is too many to mention, though there is about five major divisions: Regular rock/folk rock, pop rock, punk/noise rock, heavy rock and metal. The border between what is rock and what is pop is so blurry that it's almost non-existent.
And about my faves:
Rock: Too many to mention.
Hip Hop: El-P (and his crew Company Flow), Dan the Automator, Malk de Koijn (danish language outfit).
