I think my last experience was certainly an obscure incident. I'm a pretty big guy, 6'5", 290lbs, shaved head so I do tend to attract a little more attention than your average person, but I've travelled extensively with very little problems. I think travelling in Europe will be a lot easier than the States, so I wouldn't worry too much. Just make sure everything is in order, and understand and follow the laws of the country your are travelling to.
As a side note, make sure you know where your embassy is in the countries that you are in, just in case.
