It was about $150 for a pretty good one w/ 40GB and USB2/firewire. It is slow to copy to the drive, but once there the games run the same as far as I can tell. Since 40GB is 2X the 20GB on my laptop, it was necessary.
Besides, my CPU was a first-generation WinXP machine - and the reformat disks won't allow me to adjust the 8GB Fat32 (C drive) / 12 GB NTFS (D drive) drive partitioning. So, I was running out of space on C: drive, looking at moving the 4+ GB BGII to the D: drive anyway (making it nearly full), and I simply resolved everything by putting it all on the USB drive. S'nice.

Only problem is travelling - the games don't go with me anymore. Oh well, travelling is probably better w/out them anyway.
Oh, and if you plug/unplug from you peripherals a lot (like I do with a laptop), your machine has to "search" the drive again when you plug it back in. But, that takes only like 10 sec. anyway.
