EDIT>Cable can be way quicker than DSL, usually DSL caps out at 128kBps (at least around here) - however this depends on the speed/efficiency of the ISPs servers. Also, cable is a shared connection which means that the more users in a given area, the slower it is.

The advantage of DSL is that it is an unshared connection, but slows down with distance from the switch.

I've had download speeds on the order of 500kBps when accessing local servers, but that's unusual.
