I hope you take my opinions on this into consideration, as I used to be the webmaster of the UK's second largest/sometimes largest FF site and Forum.
Now, FF7 was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. FF6 which can be purchased on PS1 is also, brilliant. Many believe FF6 to be the best FF ever made, or FF4. The reason most people disagree is because they havent played them. They just lack graphics.
Now, FF8 was my favorite. It was different from the others, it had something about it. Now, people either think FF8 was the best or the worst. It's funny really.
FF9 was good, but not as good as 4,6,7 or 8. And FFX was a bit of a dissapointment, although I'm going to replay it and try to appreciate it more.
Go with FF7 or FF8. FF7 defo over FF9. But try and get FF6/4.
