Generic failure can mean a lot of things. It just means that there is no classification programmed for the error that has occurred. The bad news is that you probably can't fix it. The only time you might be able to fix it is if it's caused by some memory or hard-disk access problem in which case try running it with fewer programs in memory or try running it after rebooting.
