I realize that you are against taking anyone’s life; I am not arguing that point. To follow the hypothetical: I believe in this day and age we are able to tell, without a doubt, that some killers are guilty. So if someone is absolutely guilty, then maybe the death penalty is, at least, justified; even if you believe it is not humane.
