Where does it say that a mage has to be a skinny runt??? They can have a natural 18 in Str, Dex, or Con just like a fighter.
Khelben Blackstaff (of Forgotten Realms) is a good example of a powerful mage that is also relatively young and gifted with strong, physical stats.
