no, your not off. If a spell or weapon does 1D8, the easiest way to think of it is to multuply the numbers together to get the maximum you can do. therefor, a weapon hitting 1D8 can hit for a maximum of 8 (1 times 8 = 8), and a minimum of 1. So, a 3D6 could hit for a maximum of 18.
