Willow, when I got my new video card and I was looking for newer XP drivers online, I found that the newest certified drivers screwed things up badly.
I used 30.87(which Windows Update offered) until 40.72 came out, and I was able to get it from the nVidia site. I don't know if that helps, but I did have others here tell me that they weren't able to use the first round of 40.xx drivers without taking a serious performance hit.
So how should you proceed?
First, a review of the drivers in question.
Second, the use of a hammer mentioned by LofA(being careful not to damage the cyber Satanic homestead).
Third, reformatting(which may be increased in difficulty by number 2).
Sorry your stuck spending Thanksgiving with a sickly computer, but lots of turkey will solve the problem.
EDIT - Just for clarification, I mean
you eating lots of turkey, not shoving it in your computer.
