I guess I'm cold-hearted, then. I would have explained things over the phone. Like Melusine said, spare her the jitters of meeting a virtual "blind date". Not only that, but she could be wondering if your excuse was factual. She could think that you had a nice fabrication ready just in case you didn't like her looks. You just never know how someone is going to interpret something, even when it is the truth...
*just as an aside, I would normally recommend face to face if it's someone you already "know". But you two really didn't "know" each other, other than online.*
