when creating a mage, i nearly always choose Lawful Evil. it just somehow fits to mage. what i mean is, i think a mage should be excatly like that. he might work with the annoingly good paladin if there is something to be gained. he might also fire a lightning bolt on the paladin if its worth it and he no longer needs the pally. mages in general, at least i think so, are power hungry, sometimes bitter to the rest of the world for being too weak and scrawny to be anything else(for example, Raistlin was like that). i just think that a mage cannot become really powerful, without sacrifices. and if a sacrifice is needing your mothers heart for some important experiment, then the mage just sacrifices his mother in the name of science, if hes feeling particularly "good" that day. When creating a fighter, i usually take either chaotic neutral or chaotic good(a fighter needs to be at least a little crazy). for a thief or cleric, i just pick the one i want for the moment.
