Check the refresh rate, the monitor may not be able to use the one you are trying (like 800x600 at 60Hz might work, but 800x600 at 100Hz wont) This may be true on the LOW side, too. If you card is sending at, say, 56Hz, it may be out of range at the bottom. Also, go up in steps. Don't go from 640x480 to 2180x1600 all at once. Go to 800x600, then 1024x768, then 1152x900, then 1280x1024, etc. until you get one above what you want, then go back down to the one you want. Then fiddle with refresh, pick the highest one that will work.
