In BG2 it's not quite so bad - at least it tries to give you reasons you have to do other quests first. But, realistically, a D&D party would more likely infiltrate or attack the Cowled Wizards - likely via the government district buildings - than simply say, "Oh well, sucks for Imoen. Hey, let's go kill stuff for money."
