Well, there is something called "morale": If a creature (even party member) sees a powerful foe, many of his allies killed or stg else, he gots "morale failure" - his circle turnes yellow, and he randomly:
-runs,
-attacks everybody,
-panicks (combination of the two).

He is. This is why you get "pickpocketing failed" message. As your PickPocket skill grows, so grows your ability to avoid that awareness.

Thieving: my point is, that the most expensive items just lie around and you don't even get an eye of the storekeep. They just gotta be clever enough to lock 'em up somehow. And come on, even if your thieving skills are great, sooner or later even a dumb nut would realize that the mighty sorcerer's staff +666 is gone.
