Erhm, as far as I know gnomes descend from dwarwes. Perhaps the original gnomes were gnome/faerie half-breeds.
Gnomes are described as being expert craftsmen though they are not so practical and dependable due to their overactive imagination and creativity. Gnomes also value novelty above practicality.
Traditional gnomish crafts include:
Gemcutting. Gnomes, especially the elusive Svirfneblin are some of the finest gemcutters around. They seem to have an innate skill to bring the gemstones alive.
Clockwork mechanisms: Gnomes are also priced for their abilities to make complicated mechanic apparatuses of any kind, from intricate locks to mechanic animals.
