Deathkiller - I can say from freaked out experience that the window-climbing critter is more than likely a squirrel. I've seen them climb up my Mother's picture window to get to the gutter and then the roof of her house before.
And anything jumping onto an A/C unit is going to sound big due to the resonance and echo in the A/C unit.
