I read somewhere recently that most people that die in house fires are dead long before the heat gets to them, mostly (or so the article said) the people suffocate in their sleep due to carbon monoxide poisoning. When the flames do reach the body, it contorts and so we find these horribly grotesque corpses, but in actuality most of the time, they never felt a thing.
I hope that is the case.
