They`re the common link that everything on the net goes through.
The internet is one big network, but it would just not work to have every single webserver in the world connected to every other one, and alot of computers connected in to each and every one of them...
Thus, there are Root Servers. Instead of every server being connected to every viewer and every other server, they`re simply connected into these root servers that serve as an exchange. Every ISP is also connected into them. So basically, they`re what every single bit of information that goes across the internet has to pass through. Without that link, the internet would *not* be possible.
