Anthing running off of normal house current is on a 60cycle current or 60Hz. Florescent lights have a worse flicker than icandescent lights and exacerbate the eye strain if your monitor is set to 60Hz. too...something about interference patterns and such. In order for any electrical product to run at more than a 60Hz frequency you need to use a transformer which will increase or decrease your line frequency.
