Carsomyr grants 50% (not +50%). That's why the MR from the Purifier is superior in many ways IMO (since it does stack with other items).
The most MR you could get from Carsomyr is:

Wizard Slayer @ level 25 dual to thief -> innate MR = 37%
10% from tear of Bhaal -> 47%
5% from the Machine of Lum the Mad ->52%
Carsomyr equipped (use any item) -> 102% MR
If you're not going via the Wizard Slayer option, the most you could get is 65% which isn't to be sniffed at!
