How you cant get get them killed? Do the imps block your way to the portals,are there too many of them?
Good way is to lure the imps away from the portals with a few npcs,and with the rest just BASH 'EM PORTALS!!!! -evil laugh-
There is a key to the doors,somewhere,just take everything you find,and all will be ok.
