I think it's easiest to start the game with a class you can identify yourself with. If you like magic, take a mage. If you prefer combat, take a fighter for example. There are a lot of combinations, so just read the description to see which one appeals to you most. This also goes for the alignment and race, though race may limit class options. Keep in mind that multi-classed characters won't be as powerful as single-classed characters unless you intend to take them to BG2.

As for where to go, you have almost complete freedom to move around, the only limitations being your low level and sometimes the storyline. There's no need to go to the Friendly Arm Inn yet.

I think you may want to look around a bit trying to find NPCs to join your group, after which you can indeed proceed to

the Nashkel mines. After that, who knows?

Just realise that you can take all the time you want to discover the area and gain levels, there's noone forcing you to hurry through the game.

One last thing, concerning alignment. BG is mostly build around good-aligned players. You can be vil, but this will not be as beneficial as playing the goodguy.

There's only one rule: HAVE FUN

EDIT: Whoops! Almost forgot...
