I doubt it's even possible to make predictions about the lifespan of a board, especially as the entire phenomenon of message boards is only what? 4, 5 years? old... But U are right that there isn't much data on the lifespan yet, so I combined what there is with common sense...
People that make boards are usually at a certain point in their life that they have a profound interest in a subject ... later on when they lose that interst (due to changes in age/RL/social stuff etc etc) they will tend to keep the board up a few more years just for the kick (power, social obligation to members etc) untill that stops aswell...
So I would say 10 years sounds about ok ...
