My dad used to tell us to use a clove if we ever had to wait to get to a dentist but I've never tried it.
Salt will kill topical infections. Rinsing your mouth out with warm and very salty water (concentrate the swishing around the sore tooth) will kill the topical infection and alleviate the pain until you can get in to a dentist.
This is NOT A CURE for the toothache! It will make it stop hurting but the abcess can (and will) remain under the tooth and can (and will) get worse. Case in point; one of my lower wisdom teeth...it had room to come in from having my first molar pulled before it ever broke through but developed and abcess at the very rear where I apparently wasn't reaching it at gum level with my toothbrush.
I used salt water and the pain went away so I didn't go to the dentist for it and for about three years there was this cycle of toothache, salt water throughout the day, no more pain, forgetting about it.
Well when I went it to the dentist finally (separate problem with having had front teeth broken on the other side of my face in an auto accident) and the dentist pulled that wisdom tooth and found a large abcess that had been forcing itself backward into my gums that was headed toward my lower jaw...had it been let go any longer than it was, it could have actually cost me jaw bone from what he told me so do go see a dentist asap and I hope this helps you if you try it. Toothaches are the worst.
