Well there isn't really a best, a ranger is a good starting class because fighters get lotsa hitpoints, ranger have some special abilities and not many disadvantages plus they can get some spells at high levels. (Do you have throne of bhaal, if not i highly recommend it?)
Paladins are good for exactly the same reasons(especially the paladin kits also they get one of the best weapons in the game)
I really like the kensai but i wouldn't reccomend it for a first timer
ditto w/ sorcerers
clerics can be good but thier are plenty in the game(also relatively easy to play)
mages can be tough when your unfamillar w/ the spell system
don't play as a monk, very hard for a newbie
druids level kind of slow and have some other disadvantages when compared w/ clerics
thieves can be good especially when you consider the lack of a good thief character in bg2 but again hard to play through the first time
