With the Bioware site you do nothing wrong. I tried o Sunday to download the patches for SoA and ToB anbd the bioware site was dead.
You can try this site (http://www.patches-scrolls.de/), but on sunday they had no available ftp-server. Otherwise try some of the mirror sites on the Bioware page.
I normally install BG, then the patch, then ToSC and then the ToSC-patch.
