In 1872 the first ever football international took place. Scotland v England. It was a 0-0 draw. Since that time the greatest rivalry in world football has been between these two nations.

Last saturday (a day that will go down in infamy in Scotland), Scotland played the Faeroe Islands in a qualifying match for the European Championships in Portugal in 2004.

O/T geography lesson.

Description Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, this group of 18 rugged islands has sparse vegetation and a surprisingly mild climate. Ocean storms and thick fog are commonplace. Residents depend primarally on fishing and sheep raising.
Official Name Faeroe Islands (alt. Faroe, alt. Føroyar)
a self governing territory of Denmark, claimed in 1380
Administrative Capital Torshavn
Languages Faeroese, Danish
Official Currency Danish Krone
Religions Lutheran
Population 45,112
Land Area 1,399 sq km (540 sq miles)

Please note the population of 45,000. They could all fit into a big premiership ground.

Anyway, back to the story. The Faeroe Islands' are all amateurs. They have never won an international match. Little trouble for the pride of Scotland then.

12 minutes into the match and Scotland are losing 2-0. Both goals being scored by the local teacher. Scotland show their true mettle by equalising a few minutes before the end.

I would like to commiserate with all my Scottish friends on the board and would like to thank Scotland for the 130 years of rivalry. NOW THAT IT'S ALL OVER!!!!!
