I had similar problems with my older video card.
I had to go into the desktop (moniter) properties and through the Advanced button in the Settings, change the adapter to Adapter default in order to have the video drivers work the way they should. Its holding its own well. If your mom hasn't done that, check into it! It might get you your desired colors and settings back!
