The staff creates berries which heal 1 hp...not very helpful...

Also I believe the order you put the items into the pipes are...

1 being the top and leftmost and 4 being the bottom and rightmost...

3,1,2,4...I'm not sure though...best thing to do is quick-save then try the pipes out in different orders...
