I am going to edit the title again and ask for more links to be posted as people find them so non-Americans will look here too.
Lady Avalon, do a search of the city/town you are looking for and a link or links will come up telling you what year (s) the arial photos were taken.
You have to have some basic knowledge of the city or town's layout so that you can click on that general area and eventually zoom in to the blocks you are looking for. I know when I was looking at Lytle and Tucson, there were arrows on each corner of the map for navigation. Tuscon's site even provided a street map to one side with street names matching the arial map I was looking at which made it much easier.
Dad's house was easy...small town, distinct landmarks, and a very long house (4 car garage attached to the house) on the corner of two streets easily recognizable from above.
