I think if you're already close friends with whomever you are going to meet, taking your sig. other can be fun. But if you're not that close, it probably is more fun to go without him/her, as they probably have never read the forum, get none of the inside jokes, don't know anybody...
Most of the time in France we were just gossiping

and reminiscing about old threads...
