Perhaps they could elect to live somewhere on the planet that's far away from us and just too hard to reach, and leave us to screw up

Why couldn't they leave traces of themselves behind if they died out? Their remains couldn't just fade into thin air, right? Maybe their remains could have been very well-preserved by virtue of the favorable environments they happened to thrive in. And I don't quite see how the factor of 'lesser' races comes in...
