Did you read the HINTS-Irenicus.txt file?
Your equipment is right where he left it -- at the top of the map by the door. Cast Haste on yourself and ru (or just walk) up to it and pick it up. You won't be able to put on your robe in the middle of combat, but the wands and rings and scrolls may help you out.
The traditional strategy for pure fighters is to walk up, get your uber-weapon (e.g., Ages, Fury) and then attack him a bit. Thieves can set traps and lead him on a merry chase.
Some people "luck out" here by having summons that are "left over" from the first part of the fight that can be used to distract Irenicus-the-Slayer.
