Well wizards are pure slaughterhouses at higher levels but I prefer clerics myself. Clerics are decent in melee and can wear armor. I find the mage's lack of equipment annoying. I'm sure many people will argue that a mage doesn't need armor and melee skills but I'm more of the hack-and-slash person than the meticulous planning mage.
