That's right; Greaters are 7000 and I think Lessers are 1400. There are actually 2 types of Protection from Petrification: The 2nd-level Mage spell and the green Protection Scroll, which can be used by anyone, as well as Potions of Mirrored Eyes. My favorite encounter with basilisks was when I was ambushed by a Lesser, along with about 9 Gibberlings. I was NOT prepared, and I was playing my Solo Thief.....and I WON!
I just ran up & started stabbing the thing & hoped for the best. Yeeeha! But don't try that at home, though.
