Proteins are good - I get my proteins from things like red meat, eggs and fish as well. Protein shakes never worked for me (then again I'm at my proper weight anyway).
Just for the record, most supplements like creatine, HMB, etc. work mainly by speeding muscle repair after exercise as well as minimizing muscle breakdown, which means you can go to the gym and stress your muscles more often - rather than increasing muscle mass per se. It's when you rest and eat that you gain the bulk.
HMB is a bit more of an exception - even if you do minimal exercise you will still have minimal increase in lean muscle mass and a reduction in fat - it's a fat metaboliser. If you exercise and eat properly you the benefits increase exponentially. The best thing about it is that it's not an artificial substance - it's found naturally in the body and in foods like catfish and alfalfa. So it's not bad for you.
