Actually, it was his
publisher Chandler called in the middle of the night. The book had already gone to press, and the publisher figured no one would notice.
They thought about fixing it in the movie, but Chandler nixed the idea. 1940s Hollywood respected author's intellectual property much more than todays.
I knew the ages, but was mistaken on the movie, I guess. Thanks for the info.
