I wouldn't be surprised if the book contains far more fact than fiction. The desire to brag about our accomplishments is a fairly consistent human trait. This was one of the most infamous crimes of the previous century and - deep inside - the murderer would have a strong desire to tell people "I DID IT!"
By hypothetically confessing, he can get the gratification of saying "I DID IT (but not really)" without risking becoming even more of a pariah than he already has.
