Vermont's "independent" was a long-time republican that broke ties with the red party when they got control of congress. I think he realized that any earthy crunchy Vermonter has to be a little bit too hippie to be Republican. But, it's not like he originally was elected as an independent.
With Lieberman in CT, he only went "rogue independent" after he lost to another
democrat in the primaries -- he too is a long-time incumbent. And he still promises to break bread with the Democratic caucus. I like him, though, and I like it that he lost in the primaries and came back to win.
