I think you'll also find that the Pope's views are not as extreme as saying 'women deserve to be raped'. But then again, as a victim of the Church's discrimination myself, perhaps I'm not the best person to be asking seeing as I try to have as little do with any religion as I can.

with your latter statement. The church has been proactively trying to change with modern times. That cleric wants to bring us all back to the Dark Age. I think there should be limits to extreminism when it comes to speech. If we follow a extreme democracy, I would believe there would be chaos.
