That's some Grade A parenting, scare the living daylights out of a child, using an analogy that is more factual than metaphorical (suburban violence) all just to oversimplify & justify some misplaced Nationalistic pride. I've got a better version of describing the war to a child:
Son what would you do if one of your neighbours petrol bombed your house, causing tragic loss of life / damage. The neighbour, who you had actually taught to make petrol bombs when he was younger, has now gone to ground leaving you with no chance of getting revenge. "Don't know Dad, but you're scaring me!" Never mind that son, what you do is pick on another neighbour with a history of violence who "might have petrol bombs of minor destruction" and who you had a quarrell with years ago and could have finished then but you let him continue his atrocities for a decade. Now when you need to re-establish your position & reputation as top dog in the neighbourhood who destroy this neighbour, after all they're all the same these neighbours anyway!
