Attacking Iraq served 3 purposes:
1)Send a clear signal to the Middle East that the US means what it says.
2)It was doable as Saddam was hated by his own people and by all his neighbors.
3)To force political and attitude change and in the Middle East among ordinary Muslims living there. After listening to the vitriolic anti-US nonsense that their clerics and Arab media keep spewing forth so many years, ordinary Muslims actually think they can do no wrong and that all their problems are due to Americans and Israelis.
I still can't believe that most Muslims think that 9/11 was staged and that no Iraqis could have possible wore US uniforms and just to shoot other Iraqis.
Hopefully, once people settle down and are being fed/clothed daily and reconstruction begins, ordinary Muslims won't see the US as purely evil as they had once thought them to be.
Whether you are pro or against the US on the Iraq issue, this is a significant turning point for the better, I think, in Middle East affairs. Something that couldn't have happened with Saddam still around.
