Mr. Moore has also had his own TV series over here, which was rather successful, in which he exposed to us the shocking state of the US health system and so on. Also, I believe he was the inspiration for one Mark Thomas, the british version who is also extremely popular over here
Moore is one of those people that will polarize people. Right-wingers will despise and hate him, and condemn everything he does, no matter what it is, because they feel personally threatened by him, that he's going to provoke people into "taking away their guns" or somesuch.
Left-wingers will hail him and the cutting truth of his documentaries.
He'll never be judged on any work he does again, sadly (because his work is very good - no matter what some say, people don't pay to see BfC expecting to see a 'work of fiction'). He'll be judged on how much scorn his work attracts from those with an opposing agenda and who comes up with the better personal attacks - him or his opponents.
I think the reason that they're more popular in the UK is that we're willing to believe that big businesses especially and government intermittently tend to be heaving morasses of corruption, whereas in the US the far more right-wing populace (and the exponentially greater power weilded by large corporations) ensures that he gets bad press everywhere he goes.
