Another excellent topic by our esteemed colleague, Timber Loftis. Many eye-raising points are discussed, including links to sources of verification.
I, also, am in support of this war because Saddam has proven that he is unstable, both politically and (as far as I can tell) mentally. There will be an increased likelihood of long-lasting peace in the Middle East with him gone.
However, I am not so naive as to think that Bush & Company have not lied and will not lie to me if they think it is necessary to do so. In fact, I would be shocked to discover that any President had not lied at some point; lying is simply a drawback to becoming the leader of a nation (cynical, I know, but I feel that to be the truth nonetheless). All we need do is remember to take any statement from the White House with a grain of salt.
No country wants to be invaded by subsequently told what to do and what not to do, but the temptation towards "empire-building" seems to be almost too much for those in Washington to resist. I'm certain that Bush (or more specifically, those backing him) would love to topple Hussein and put a pro-US government in place. History is rife with examples of nations controlling those who have been conquered only to find the tables have turned, with the conquered becoming the conquerers. In short, if we don't start learning from our mistakes right now and get out of Iraq as soon as Hussein is gone then this particular problem will come back to haunt us for years to come. Part of the current problem is because we messed around in Iran, then needed an ally in the Middle East to fight against Iran--namely, Saddam Hussein. (by the way, it was Bush Sr. who helped place Hussein into power) It is no wonder that so many Muslims despise America--we have a history of interference with their internal affairs.
*whew* I need a refill of my coffee cup after all that.
Anyway...we need to finish the job quickly and get out completely, then let the Iraqis decide their future for themselves. If they choose democracy, good; if not, then leave them to their own fate.
Not everyone has forgotten Afghanistan--they are once again the world's foremost producer of poppy plants, the basic ingredient for herion.
My apologies to Timber Loftis; I didn't mean to derail the thread.
